DAVID ORCHARD
was the inspiration for FREEWORLD.
He is a tireless crusader against globalization and the Americanisation
of Canada. I read his book while researching a documentary about
NAFTA and have since had the good fortune to work with him on a promotional
video for his 1998 Federal PC Party Leadership campaign.
MANDEE LABELLE is
a good friend of mine from Brookfield High School and 742 Air Cadet Squadron
way back in the day. She has since spent several years as one of
the Canadian Forces' first female weapons technicians, and is currently
studying Psychology at McGill. There is a lot of Mandee in the character
of Hiroko Doko.
WRITTEN THESIS,
Includes a budget, original (perhaps geeky) shooting script, my thoughts
on the production, and artistic analysis of the film (Word Document).
FREEWORLD was created as a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) thesis at the University
of British Columbia.
FREEWORLD has also been heavily influenced
by the work of Michael Moore (though I wrote it before Canadian Bacon
came
out), Noam Chomsky (especially the idea that America has only two enemies:
1. The world and 2. The domestic population), Pierre Berton, George Orwell,
Douglas Adams, Robert A Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, John Brunner, Woody Allen
(especially Sleeper), Maude Barlow, and by such thingies as
the Role-Playing Game "Paranoia" and the series Red Dwarf, the Goodies,
Dr Who, and so on.
